With the D.P.C.M. published in the Official Journal no. 297 of 22 December 1997 establishes the passive acoustic requirements of buildings and determines the maximum limits of exposure to noise in the external and internal environment. The law establishes the permissible soundproofing performances for the facade (in which the glass is particularly involved), for the walls, the attics and the ceilings. The urban territory is in fact divided into classes of intended use. Therefore, the minimum permissible soundproofing values are determined in relation to the different intended use of the premises in question.
The increasing attention to safety has generated regulations with which the requirements to be respected have been precisely determined. UNI EN standards define products, control systems and performance classification methods. The task of regulating the methods for choosing the products that can be used in national building projects is entrusted to the individual states. In Italy, it is the UNI 7697 standard that performs this function, listing a wide range of cases and indicating for each one which type of product can be used and, if necessary, prescribing the minimum permissible performance class.
In compliance with the provisions of the Kyoto Protocol, with the law n°311 of December 2006 on energy efficiency in buildings which updates the Legislative Decree 192/05 the parameters are established which must be respected by the various materials to limit the emissions of the greenhouse gases and improve the energy performance of buildings. Maximum U thermal transmittance limits are set, both for the window as a whole and, independently, for the glass. Both of these performance values must be respected. The prescribed limit values change according to the climatic zones (defined by Presidential Decree 26/08/93 n. 412) in which the windows are installed.
